Overinvolvement
Reply Quote

So here's my experience.  I told my family and close friends, and they've been very supportive.  In fact, too supportive.  They all want to go with me to doctors appointments and be super-involved.  I've tried to thank them and tell them (nicely) that they need to back off a bit, to no avail.

Especially troubling is one of my good friends continues to send me articles she finds in alternative media, about various things she sees as being perhaps causes of ms or cures for it.

Any suggestions on how to curb all of their overinvolvement?

Hmmm, well that is a different kind of problem. You're lucky to have so much love around you, but I understand how that can also be stifling. The basic issue is that your friends and family feel helpless. Maybe instead of telling them to back off you could give them specific jobs to do. Like ask your friend who is collecting articles to just keep track of them and then send them to you once every few months. You might also get that person to read this site through for you or with you BEFORE they go crazy sending you articles. That way when they do send you something it is better educated and maybe even helpful. Let a friend drive you to the doctors and keep the car warm for you. Think about the things you most need and ask for that specifically. You can also tell people to save their offer of assistance for a special time when you might need more help, such as when you are sick or undergoing some treatment.

Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes!
